Even with a stuffy nose, that familiar San Diego fragrance is detectable and triggers memories of visits over many years. Eucalyptus trees surely contribute. This one is right in my sister’s backyard.
Just to the east stands this 15-foot-high grapefruit tree, below, whose life began in our father’s breakfast 30 years ago. He found a tiny sprout on a seed still inside the fruit. He planted it in a pot. But he didn’t live to see the tree it became, the bearer of the best grapefruit we’ve tasted. We must eat at least one on every visit.
